Beer Street & Gin Lane

Above are etchings published on February 1, 1751 by William Hogarth, designed to be viewed together. It contrasts the perceived health, industry, and prosperity of a community that drinks traditional English beer with the chaos and ruin depicted in Gin Lane. During the height of the 18th-century "Gin Craze", Gin being an umbrella term for white spirits often used at the time. The scene shows well-fed workers, thriving commerce, and happy citizens enjoying tankards of ale, with the local pawnbroker as the only business failing. Beer being much lower in strength and much safer to consume than water, Hogarth aimed to encourage beer consumption over the more destructive Gin.
